This is plate 11 from the second series of Sandby’s well known views of Wales.
This second series of views is dedicated to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, who had become very important to Sandby. Not only did Sandby teach Sir Watkin to draw, he became a regular member of the household at Wynnstay in the early 1770s. He was paid handsomely for his time in Wales. The Wynnstay account book shows that on 28th June 1771, Sandby was paid £150 for teaching and forty days at two guineas a day for being away from London.

Copper plate engravings after Paul Sandby, from ‘A Collection of One Hundred and Fifty SELECT VIEWS in England, Scotland and Ireland’, published by John Boydell in 1781.
This was a collection of views mainly after paintings or drawings by Sandby and using the finest engravers of the day. It was a very successful publication, more affordable than Sandby’s larger prints, providing an insight into the countryside of the British Isles. One hundred and eight of the views were first published by Kearsly in 1778 but such was the demand that another edition with the extra views was published.
All measure to platemark approximately 165 x 204mm. Very good later hand colour.
